Lesson 5: Guaraldi and Bach

  • Bach: P&F in C minor, Fugue first 2 pages
  • Vince Guaraldi: The Christmas Song, Christmas is Coming, Linus and Lucy
  • Liszt: Un Sospiro, last section

Pieces Covered and Feedback

  • Linus and Lucy, good
  • The Christmas Song, good, played through
  • Liszt: played last section, and whole piece, from memory.  Some memory slips, middle cadenza at about 2/3 speed.
  • Brought out the melody in the last section in final play through, in the alternating thumbs.

Made it through all 3 pieces, still rushing the half and dotted quarters.  Some triplet quarters rushed.

  • Christmas Time is Here: work on triplet quarters, keep half and dotted half notes for correct time, cutting too short
  • O Tannenbaum: first look at swinging the beat, bringing out the main voice.

Mostly listening and observing for this first lesson.

  • Bach: bring out main notes
  • Liszt: Bring out the main upper voice notes over the rolling lower voice.
  • George Winston: bringing out the main theme
  • Elgar: bringing out the main theme, quieter left hand
